Cort Nielsen Takes Binck Bank Tour Stage Win
Magnus Cort Nielsen took the win on stage five at the
Binck Bank Tour
Stage Five was a 204.4km stage from Sint-Pieters-Leeuw to
Lanaken with Matej Mohoric in the leader’s jersey.
Alexis Gougeard of AG2R, Magnus Cort Nielsen (AST), Van den
Berg (RNL) and Jonas Rickaert (SVB) formed a break with Rickaert first to the
first sprint points of the day.
After Mads Pedersen abandoned, their lead went out to 3.20
but had fallen to 2.20 with 60kms to go.
A crash with around forty kilometres left, held up some
of the riders including Marcel Kittel who was able to get back into the peloton
which was 2.34 behind.
Magnus Cort Nielsen was first over the line at the next
sprint and took two of the three Golden Kilometre sprints with the first for
Rickaert.
Onto the final 9.8km lap and the gap was down to 1.35.
Rickaert crashed into his team car with just over five
kilometres to go leaving three up front to battle it out with Magnus Cort Nielsen
taking the win in 3.49.50 ahead of Julius Van den Berg and Alexis Gougeard.Matej Mohoric keeps his leader's jersey
“It’s amazing,” said Cort Nielsen. “I did not really
believe it but if you don’t try you don’t win.
“For sure, the sprint teams were aware but I saved my
legs for the last one hour and twenty and went full gas.
“We all committed 100% and now I am here its amazing I have
not won many races like this.”
