Matteo Trentin Takes Vuelta Andalucia Stage Two Win
European Champion
Matteo Trentin of Mitchelton-Scott has won the second stage of the Vuelta Andalucia.
The Ruta de Sol,
now in its 65th edition, had Lotto Soudal’s Tim Wellens in the
yellow jersey for the second 216.5km stage from Sevilla to Torredonjimeno.
Kevin
Van Melsen, Alexandr Kulikovskiy, Mattia Viel, Umberto Orsini, Juan Antonio
López-Cozar and Dzmitry Zhyhunou got into a break and were soon seven minutes
ahead.
Into
the Cordoba area and that lead was down to 4.20 and fell to 3.30 and then three
minutes going into the last one hundred kilometres of the stage.
Van
Melsen was first over the climb at Bujalance and second at Cañete de las Torres
as the gap dropped to 1.10 going into the province of Jaen.
The
break was caught going over the category three climb with twenty kilometres to
go.
Simon
Yates of Mitchelton-Scott had done a ton of work all day and was riding on the
front with 8.3km to go.
Under
the flam rouge and through the narrow streets and Caja Rural and Movistar were
on the front.
Ivan
Garcia went early but it Danny Van Poppel and Matteo Trentin came up and it was
a photo finish. Matteo Trentin of Mitchelton-Scott was awarded the win in 5.55.28
ahead of Van Poppel and Garcia.
Tim
Wellens finished in 12th place and keeps his leader’s jersey.
