Max Richeze of Quick Step has
won the opening stage of the 54th Presidential
Tour of Turkey.
The race, put pack from
April due to security concerns, started with a 150km stage that started and
finished in Konya.
Five riders in Sessler (BBH), Barrenetxea (EUS), Txoperena
(EUS), Van Rooy (SVB), Samli (TUR) broke with Van Rooy taking the first
sprint on a day of temperatures around 28/29 degrees.
Their lead maxed at 2.20
but was at 1.13 with 43.7kms to go.
Txoperena took the three
points on the category three climb after 108.2kms as the gap hovered around the

twenty kilometres and the break was only 16 seconds ahead with Quick Step and
Bora Hansgrohe chasing on.
The break was caught and
an attack by the Turkish champion Balkan failed as they went into the Turkish
Beauty Sprint with ten kilometres to go.
Balkan attacked again and
took the sprint ahead of Alvaro Hodeg of Quick Step and briefly led.
Gaviria crashed with 3.7kms
to go and got up holding his collarbone, following a touch of wheels.
Bora Hansgrohe continued
on the front before Quick Step moved up and led going under the flam rouge.
Richeze was supposed to
be leading out Gaviriad but was allowed to go and took the win in 3.29.34 ahead
of Sam Bennett of Bora Hansgrohe.
